Think of poker in India and one name immediately comes to mind. That name is Aditya Agarwal, the OG poker pro. Simply put, Agarwal is the Sachin Tendulkar of poker in India. This player who hails from Kolkata has gone strength to strength not just as a pro but also as a poker coach. There is no dearth of wins, final tables, deep runs and the hunt for glory is always on for this Bengaluru resident. Be it live or online poker, Adi ‘Intervention’ Agarwal has mastered the card game like no other player has managed from the Indian poker circuit.
The poker pro who was studying engineering in the United States, was introduced to poker at just 19 years of age. Agarwal did not venture into conventional jobs and took to poker like fish takes to water. In 2006 Agarwal first marked his attendance at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) and became one of the first Indians to grind at the coveted poker series. It was in 2007 when Agarwal etched his name in history books to become the first Indian to score a cash at the prestigious and highly competitive WSOP Main Event.
With Agarwal’s largest live score of $286,705 coming from the $10,000 No Limit Hold’em – Super Turbo Bounty (Event #76) at the WSOP 2021, Agarwal has amassed $967,327 only from WSOP events via his 57 cashes. Not just with WSOP, Agarwal raced ahead to be the first Indian poker player to cash at the European Poker Tour (EPT) hosted in Barcelona in 2007. He took the 15th spot for a payday of €25,100 (₹14.05 Lakh) in the EPT Main Event.
The poker pro cum coach once again made history as the first Indian pro to become the brand ambassador for global poker platform, PokerStars. The world renowned international poker site announced in 2015 that Agarwal would be their Team Pro. Popularly known as ‘Intervention’ in the poker circuit, Agarwal served as PokerStars Team Pro for five years and then parted ways with the online poker platform in December 2019.
With a poker career spanning over two decades, Agarwal has undoubtedly become a force to reckon with in the Indian poker industry. For those who track live earnings and ranking, Agarwal has total live earnings of $1,547,017. Poker rankings put Agarwal on the sixth position in India All Time Money List and 1,600th on the All Time Money List. In the coming time, Agarwal will only look to bump up these numbers and add more achievements to his credit.
