What is a blind raise?

The player to the left of the dealer, i.e., the small blind puts a predetermined amount into the pot (say for this example, one chip). The next player further to his left adds two chips into the pot. This second player to the left of the small blind has gone for a blind raise. The action of raising the small blind is known as blind raise.

Blind raise generally is a forced raise that the player has to make. The next player in action can then either call by placing the same amount or re-raise the bet by adding a higher amount. It is to be noted that blind raise and blind re-raise can only happen in the initial rounds of betting.

Significance of blind raise

As mentioned earlier blind raise is a compulsory bet. This is done to have more player participation and to make sure that players have some stakes in the game. If this is not done, there will be no or very little money involved in the game and thus little or no action at the poker table.
