Gutshot Poker Dictionary – Straight Run

Not your normal straight! Here we come with a new word to help you amp up your Poker vocabulary. In general terms, a straight run means a direct attempt at anything without obstacles. 

In poker, A straight hand or straight run refers to five consecutive cards of any suit. By consecutive we mean, five cards of sequential rank, not all of the same suit, such as 7♣ 6♠ 5♠ 4♥ 3♥.  In terms of hand rankings in traditional Texas Hold’em Poker, a straight is between a flush and three of a kind, with flush being the best of the three. 

 

Some probabilities under high-card rules 

An Ace-high straight – A♦ K♣ Q♣ J♦ 10♠

A five-high straight – 5♣ 4♦ 3♥ 2♥ A♠

An Ace-high hand – Q♠ K♠ A♣ 2♥ 3♦ (but it cannot rank both high and low simultaneously )

Under deuce-to-seven low rules 

An ace-high hand – 5♥ 4♠ 3♥ 2♣ A♦ (Ace ranks high)

Under Ace-to-six low rules

King-high hand – A♣ K♠ Q♠ J♦ 10♠ (Ace always ranks low)

Under Ace-to-five low rules

Ten-high hand – 10♥ 9♠ 8♣ 7♣ 6♦ (straights are not possible)

Every straight is ranked according to its highest-ranking card. For example, J♥ 10♥ 9♣ 8♠ 7♥ > 10♠ 9♠ 8♣ 7♥ 6♠ > 6♣ 5♠ 4♥ 3♠ 2♦. Straight hands that differ only by suit, such as 9♣ 8♣ 7♣ 6♦ 5♦ and 9♠ 8♠ 7♠ 6♥ 5♥, are of equal rank. There are two types of straights, namely Broadway straight and Baby straight.  

• A Broadway straight is An ace-high straight, such as A♣ K♣ Q♦ J♠ 10♠
• A Baby straight also known as a bicycle or wheel, which is a five-high straight in ace-t0-five low such as 5♠ 4♦ 3♦ 2♠ A♥
