Online gambling leads to the death of two in Tamil Nadu

Gambling has had a long history in India, and while being exciting and fun, the thrills of gambling can often be addicting, which can sadly lead to many unfortunate consequences. The availability of the internet in the country, could have been one of the reasons why people resort to online gambling and thus fall into many debt traps from it.

In the past few days, the state of Tamil Nadu has reported many online gambling related deaths and has just recently added two more deaths from Coimbatore to that list. One of the two men was a 28-year old Jeevanandam of Thondamuthur who hung himself after losing money in online gambling. He was running a computer sales and service centre in partnership and had set aside INR 50,000 to be given to his friend but lost INR 20,000 in online rummy. Unable to bear the loss and due to mental depression, Jeevanandam hanged himself in his house.

The other was 32-year old Jayachandran, a lathe operator in Sundarapuram who hung himself in his house on Monday night. According to the statement given by his relatives, the reason for his suicide was that he had borrowed money to undergo heart surgery a couple years ago and was unable to repay it in full. He then got addicted to online gambling and tried to win the required amount but after being unsuccessful, he became mentally upset and ended his life.

Similar deaths in the district has led the State government to actively consider regulating these online games and sites, the Advocate General (AAG) M. Sricharan Rangarajan informed the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court. In another news, Virat Kohli and former cricketer Sourav Ganguly who were promoting the online gaming app Mobile Premier League and the fantasy league app My11Circle respectively, were both issued notices by the court for endorsing these online games in advertisements which encouraged young people to indulge in online gambling.
