Online poker giant PokerStars announced the dates for its World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) 2021. The championship will kick-start on August 22nd and run till September 15th, 2021. This time the WCOOP has a mind-blowing $100 million in guaranteed prize pool. This is by far the biggest guarantee offered in the series’ two-decade history.
While a detailed schedule is yet to be released, this gives poker players a perfect opportunity to prepare and clear out their schedules for the much-awaited event. Just last year, the WCOOP had an $80 million in guarantee, a sum that was crushed thanks to the 1,120,910 total entries across 75 events. The huge success and turnout resulted in the event hitting $99.9 million in total prize pool.
Last year, online poker was experiencing a surge in players, due to the COVID-19 induced lockdown. The WCOOP 2020 was recorded as the second-best WCOOP with respect to the number of total entries.
It would be exciting to see how WCOOP 2021 pans out and whether it will surpass its advertised guarantee. PokerStars’ WCOOP made its debut in 2002 with a total prize pool of $8,00,000.
Since then, the event has grown in size and popularity. From 2002 to 2020, WCOOP has hosted over 1,433 tournaments and witnessed 5.2 million entries. The combined prize pool from previous years stands tall at $973 million. This means that with this year’s event, the $1 billion mark will be nailed.
