There are some bizarre poker terms that we have become familiar with. While it is common to associate poker with various famous figures or things, there are also some terms that seem to be out of place. You may have heard of the term ‘Shaka Zulu’ in poker but have no idea what it means. While the term may sound like something you might say when performing a magic trick, it carries a significant history behind it. Here’s all you need to know about this term.

Shaka Zulu was actually the name of an influential Zulu king, known as Shaka kaSenzangakhona or Shaka Zulu for short. He ruled over the Zulu kingdom in South Africa from 1816 to 1828. He is a significant part of Zulu history and culture and was well-known for forming one of the strongest Zulu militaries during his reign. He was assassinated by his half-brother and although influential, remains a highly controversial figure due to the numerous wars and chaos witnessed during his rule.
The term ‘Shaka Zulu’ mainly refers to the black kings in a deck of cards. Namely the kings of spades and the king of clubs. The term must have been given to the two black kings in the deck of cards to associate them with the black Zulu king.

Besides poker, the term has also become a part of other areas of popular culture. The term ‘Shakalaka’ was a chant often used in reggae sound culture. The king himself is referred to in various Jamaican idioms and the culture. The strategy video game called Civilization also features the Shaka Zulu as a playable character in all six instalments.
