Gutshot Poker Dictionary – Behind a Log

Poker can be a fun game to play with just anyone. While the game has evolved and grown to form its own community in various parts of the world, it has also developed a language of sorts. Terms and words that only avid players will be accustomed to hearing. Sometimes these words are thrown around while playing a live game or even heard during live commentary. ‘Behind a Log’ will be the poker term we’ll be learning today.

What does Behind a Log mean?

The term describes a situation in which a player who is way ahead of his opponents and only plays the best hands he gets. This is done to ensure that he stays in the lead and that position is not taken by his opponent. Anything can happen in a poker game, which is why players need to be careful about how they play and the opponent’s gameplay.

Once a player is comfortable with their position in the game, they will try to maintain it for as long as they can. One way of doing this is by choosing the kind of hand they play or in other words playing conservatively. They will only bet on premium hands like pocket aces or pocket kings which are thought to be one of the best hands to get in poker.

It is almost as if the player is hiding ‘behind a log’ and playing. The move is often considered to be a smart one as there it shows that the player is careful about their game. So, the next time you hear someone say, “He/She was playing behind a log,” you know exactly what they mean.
