Poker Dictionary – Backdoor Straight


Whether you’ve been playing poker for years or have started playing recently, you will always come across some poker terms that you haven’t heard before. In this article, we will discuss the term — Backdoor Straight. The term is commonly used in Texas Hold’em and Omaha poker games. 

What is Backdoor Straight?

Backdoor straight is straight which is completed using both the turn and the river card. A backdoor in poker is when a player needs two consecutive cards on the board in order to complete a hand. When a player completes a straight on two consecutive cards, i.e., a turn and river, it is known as a backdoor straight.

Example:

Player A has hole cards 9 and 6. The flop opens to A, 5, 8. These cards add very less or no value to the player’s hand. Subsequently, the turn and river produce 7 and 8 respectively.
