Just like how hands and certain plays are given a name in poker, so are the poker players involved in the game. In this article, we’re going to be looking at a poker term that alludes to a kind of poker player. This poker term is called an ‘active player.’ Let’s learn more about this poker term and what it means.
In a poker game, an active player is a player that has not folded his hand and still has a stake in the pot. It also means that the player has been dealt in and can still act on his hand. When a poker game starts, all the players that have been dealt in are considered active players in the game. It should be noted that the number of active players cannot increase during the course of the game. If a player folds or throws away their hand, they are no longer considered an active player.
Interestingly, an active player is not the same as an action player. These two are often confused with the other but they mean two different things. While an active player is anyone that can still act in the game, an action player refers to a player that frequently bets and raises no matter what hand they have.
There are two ways in which an active player can become non-active. The first is when they throw away or fold their hand (as mentioned above), the second is when the player has his hand fouled. In this case, a fouled hand means a dead hand that cannot be used to play.
