Playing poker can be fun and an enjoyable way to spend time with friends. However, there are many who enjoy the game so much that they are willing to take the next step and become professional poker players. If you think becoming a poker pro is easy, you might want to think again. Not only does one require a lot of discipline and practice to master the game, but poker pros also spend hours of their time analyzing and studying strategies.
They learn from any study materials they can get their hands on-poker live streams, poker coaching classes, and the ever so conventional poker books. In this article, we’ll be listing down a few poker books that have been recommended by top poker players in India. If you’re looking for some good poker books to read, you just might find some of these handpicked selections.
Grab a pen and paper because the first book on our list is Poker Workbook by James ‘SplitSuit’ Sweeney. Recommended by India’s first female professional poker player Muskan Sethi, the book is an extensive source on the math behind poker. If you think this is just another poker read, then you’d be wrong because the Poker Workbook requires you to actively participate and work on solving the problems on your own. Just like the math textbook you had in school.
Sethi says, “Poker Workbook is the first book you should start with. It is a workbook that will help you practice odds and concepts with practical examples and assignments.”
The main aim of the book is to help you make quick calculations while playing, a skill set that is valuable when grinding to win on the poker tables.

Next up is ‘Modern Poker Theory’ by Michael Acevedo, recommended by Adda52 Game Ambassador Kunal Patni. It’s not a surprise that this book made it to the list. Since its release, Modern Poker Theory has been popular on the must-read list of many players. The book provides one of the most comprehensive insights on game theory optimal (GTO). Written by a professional poker player, coach, mathematician, and poker theorist, it is easily one of the best reads you will find on the subject.
Not only is the book offering you some of the most in-depth insights into poker strategy, but it’s doing so in a more accessible way. Acevedo himself said, “I wrote Modern Poker Theory with the intention to make Game Theory accessible to everyone.”
If you want to get on top of your game and understand the mechanics behind every poker strategy, then this book is just what you need.
When it comes to a book on live poker, very few come close to the level of dedication and insight that is uncovered in Gus Hansen’s Every Hand Revealed. In this book, Hansen records every hand he’s played that led him to win a $1.2 million score at the 2007 Aussie Millions Main Event. The book was recommended by poker pro, Ashish Ahuja who confessed it was one of his favourite poker books of all time. There is no central poker theory in the book, however, there is a raw clarity in the way Hansen explains his moves and the reasons behind his decisions.
Even though it’s been more than ten years since the book’s first release, it still stands as one of the most interesting poker reads one can find.

Another recommendation by Muskan Sethi; this book by Matthew Janda aims to give a deeper look into poker strategies that one is already familiar with. However, as it touches more complex concepts such as balancing multiple bet-sizing ranges, overbetting, check-raising as the preflop raiser etc., the book is mostly recommended to players playing in the upper microstakes. “It is a great book to build a solid foundation, especially if you are an online poker player,” says Sethi. While players in the beginning stages may find the book a little challenging, for seasoned players it’s a read that is sure to help them discover more about their current strategies.
Finally on the list of recommendations is Harrington on Hold’em by Dan Harrington and another great recommendation by Ahuja. The book has two volumes and is considered to be one of the best written on tournament poker. The book takes you through the different stages of a tournament and how you can play in each stage. From starting hands to poker positions, the book is filled with valuable knowledge that could help you on the live felts. With live tournaments coming back, don’t miss out on learning everything you need to know before hitting the tables.
These are just some of the many brilliant poker books out there. Poker is an expansive subject with new strategies coming out every day and with these poker books, let’s hope that the learning never stops.
