Gambling den busted in Jharsuguda Police arrested 17 persons


Odisha has been witnessing a surge in COVID-19 tally with over 1,000 new cases being reported almost every day since July 21. This has pushed the total reported cases to more than 1000 cases in 10 districts of the city. Free time due to this pandemic gives rise to gambling activities in the city. On Thursday, the local police of Jharsuguda, raided a gambling den and arrested 17 persons at the site.

The accused were involved in the gambling activity when the police raided the den near Kali temple road in Jharsuguda town area. Along with the 17 detainees, the police also seized INR 1.81 lakhs, six motorcycles, sixteen mobile phones, one Maruti Suzuki Swift car and other incriminating articles were acquired during the raid. Jharsuguda Superintendent of Police, Rahul PR said “The police have registered a case against the accused in regard to illegal gambling and for not adhering to social distancing norms. The arrested persons have been forwarded to the court today.”

Gambling den in Odisha 17 arrested

On Monday, the local police of Berhampur, Odisha, raided a gambling den and detained 17 persons at the gambling site despite the nationwide lockdown.The police also captured twelve mobile phones and INR 26,000 were seized at the site. Another such case was unearthed in May, where nine gamblers were arrested following a raid by police on gambling base in VIP Colony of IRC village. Most of the arrested persons were businessmen and contractors, the police seized INR 1.5 lakh and 3 cars from the accused. 

Going by the rapid rise in the number of COVID-19 cases, it is being anticipated that the state’s caseload may increase by 65,000 this month. With ample of free time and restricted movement due to the lockdown, has provided a scope to people sitting at home to spend their savings in gambling.
