The local police have launched a massive crackdown on poker in Bangalore in the last year or so. Earlier being one of the few cities in India to have licensed live poker games, the industry has suffered in Bangalore with all/most of the top poker rooms having to shut shop in recent months.
In a recent development, the police conducted a raid in a hotel in Koramangala, Bangalore, while also arresting 19 players who were said to be ‘engaging in a poker game held illegally’ in The Roy Grand Inns Hotel. The raid is said to have taken place in the early hours of Saturday morning, which saw an immediate detaining of the players involved.
The police reportedly seized around INR 9.96 Lakh in poker chips along with cash and mobile phones. Manjunath, Hemant and Gajendra were three people named from those being arrested. A case has also been registered in this regard at the Koramangala Police Station.
Mobile phones of these players seized to conduct a search and find out if several other such games were held like this one. While this particular raid was conducted in Koramangala, police have reason to believe that several illegal games are taking place across Bangalore and investigations regarding the same are being carried out at the moment. It is believed that all those arrested were let out on bail over the weekend itself.
The last few months have seen several similar raids and many clubs have been forced to shut down for conducting such poker games as well as other high-stakes gambling activities. When you think about a group of people sitting and playing cards, it isn’t a very terrifying notion, but the police are only abiding by the current rules which we can only hope change with time.
