Dan Cates’ Early Days

Born Daniel Cates on 14th November 1989 in Bowie, Maryland, the two-time Poker Players Championship winner first played poker at 17. Cates even worked at McDonalds to help fund his bankroll. In 2009, the pro lost his bankroll to Viktor Blom at Full Tilt Poker. But later Cates bounced back stronger; he went full throttle and played high stakes poker. Best part is that he beat some noted players in the circuit which caught the attention of many back in the day.

In August 2010, Cates and Tom Dwan locked horns to grind in four tables of stakes $200/$400 in No Limit Hold’em games for 50,000 hands. The challenge was that if Cates beat Dwan by a sum of $1 or more, the former would get paid $1.5 Million. As of April 2011, Cates was over a million dollars after playing 19,335 hands against Dwan.

Cates has won two WSOP bracelets in the Poker Players Championship event in 2021 and 2022. In 2019, he finished sixth in the same event for $168,305. As per WSOP.com, Cates has $2,586,428 in recorded earnings from WSOP events.
