WSOP Flashback: Ivey Defeats Slim to Win his First-Ever Bracelet!

Most of us like to dwell in the past or try to relive those extraordinary moments. In poker world, when we try to open the door to the past, the first thing to pop up in our mind is the the grandest of all, the World Series of Poker (WSOP), without doubt! Today we are looking back at a time when the preliminary events increased from 16 to 25, sure, the size of the breathtaking Main Event grew a sizable amount. Many professional players took home bracelets in these events in 2000. Most notably, two notable female players were Jerri Thomas ($1,500 seven-card stud) and Jennifer Harman ($5,000 no-limit deuce-to-seven lowball).

But the WSOP was still being played at Binion’s Horseshoe Casino and media coverage was mostly limited to poker-centric outlets but all of that changed over a period of time and that includes Phil Ivey‘s net worth too! The Tiger Woods of Poker has won 10 gold bracelets, 31 final tables and finished 59 times in the money within 20 years.

But that was the day when the young mind began creating history. The WSOP $2,500 Pot Limit Omaha drew 195 entries aiming for the top prize of $195,000. Ivey’s first ever bracelet of 2000 turned out to be Amarillo Slim’s last final table appearance ever. Ivey defeated Slim in heads-up, the game’s first true ambassador who helped to bring poker to the mainstream by hitting the national television circuit.

In 2002, he won three bracelets to share the record for most World Series tournaments won in a single year. Ivey’s total of 10 bracelets puts him in a three-way tie with Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan for second most all-time. He is however, the youngest to win 10 at the age of 38. Aside from his success in the WSOP, the legend has also has nine FT finishes in World Poker Tour (WPT) with two back-to-back WPT titles in 2003.

Looking at the various winnings of Phil, it is easy to decipher that he is one of the top earners in the poker industry. According to Hendon Mob, Ivey’s live earning exceeds $30 million, sitting 1st in all time money list best rank and 2nd in popularity ranking throughout the world!
