There are far fewer things in poker that one wants to win besides money and one of those things is the WSOP bracelet; one of the most coveted prizes in the poker world. Many players all over the globe participate in WSOP events every year for a chance to hold the prestigious bracelet in their hand.
Any poker fanatic or enthusiast will tell you that the WSOP bracelets are a pretty big deal. The bracelets are to poker what Olympic medals are to sports. Elevating whoever wins it to an almost superstar level, a serious power move in the poker world.
But how did something so nuance as a bracelet become a signifier for how good you are in a popular card game? It all started in 1970, when the founder Benny Binion held the first WSOP event. The winner took home the prize money and a silver cup which changed into other kinds of trophies for the next 5 years. It wasn’t until 1976 that the first WSOP bracelet was given to the champion.
Initially the bracelet was not considered to be anything great, with the first bracelet winner Doyle Brunson stating that at the time it did not mean anything to him. But today, the bracelet has become a status symbol for the many champions who have cemented their place in the WSOP.
Over the years, the bracelet itself has also undergone quite a transformation. Starting from looking like gold nuggets hammered flat to having diamonds, rubies, and sapphires embedded in it. The contract of being its official manufacturer has been passed through many hands. In 2012, the jewelry designer and owner of Jason of Beverly Hills, Jason Arasheben was chosen to be the bracelets official manufacturer.
With so much history behind one of poker’s most cherished rewards, it’s no wonder that for many players it is the ultimate prize. Champions who hold the bracelet are considered to be in a complete league of their own. The rising popularity of poker assures us that it’s most coveted prize will be here to welcome many more champions into its world.
