Poker fans rejoice! There could be a Rounders 2. We don’t know when or how, but there’s at least a chance of a Roundersverse.
Matt Damon must love him some felt and casinos. He has been part of several movies with big money as a central theme, including, of course, the iconic Ocean franchise. Another of his movies that centers around money-making is Rounders, one of those rare movies that treats poker as a game of skill and not a launch pad for a heist or something else of that kind.
Rounders, released in 1998, is a unique movie about a man who is a very good poker player. He struggles to stay away from the game for various reasons, including his girlfriend and the fact that he once lost a massive amount at a poker game. The movie follows his story as he tries to get his friend back on track, help him repay a crushing debt, and still avoid the allure of poker.

Rounders is iconic for several reasons, one of them being an intense and meaningful cameo by John Malkovich as a poker player to end all poker players. In an interview on the Rich Eisen Show, Damon said that both he and Ed Norton were down for a Rounders sequel when asked about which of his movies he’d like to create a sequel of.
“The one that we’ve been talking about for years, and I just saw Edward Norton a few weeks ago, all of us want to do it is a second Rounders movie because so much has happened in that poker world in the last 25 years. It would be fun to catch up with those guys,” Damon responded.
Edward Norton plays Damon’s friend, someone who has just recently been released from prison and still believes that he can make it big with that one strong game of poker.
With this announcement, Rounders becomes one of those iconic 90s movies that could become franchises. The nineties have given us strong franchises like Terminator, Jurassic Park, Alien, and others. A movie like Rounders would be a welcome addition.

Casinos and poker games have been featured in some of the most popular and action-oriented movies. For example, James Bond has been introduced not once but twice in a casino and at the poker table, once by Sean Connery in Casino Royale (1967) and again by Daniel Craig in 2006. But Rounders is a bit different because it handles poker as not just a game but also part of a lifestyle. The movie is a study of a poker psychology.
Poker fans will be excited about this announcement, and it remains to be seen whether a sequel will be released soon in theaters. Until then, one can dream.
