Poker: How This Game Helps In Better Decision Making

Poker is not just a card game, it’s a game of skill, numbers, and offers a lot of valuable life lessons. When approaching any professional or recreational player, one thing they will always point out is—the lessons which the game has taught them. For those who are not well versed with poker, the first attraction is the money for many players. But when you dive deeper, you will realise that there’s a lot more to learn from it.

One important skill that poker players seem to gain from the gameplay, is learning how to make important fact-based decisions. This skill is crucial in both life and business. Let’s see how poker influences our decision-making skills.

1. Risk vs Rewards

Any good decision maker will always consider the risk and rewards while analyzing the situation. In poker making certain moves is not recommended. For example, it is advised to not bet when you’re holding a 2 and 7 off suit. These two cards are considered the worst starting hands in poker as you cannot make a straight and even if they are suited, they will make a very low flush. Here the risk of not making a good hand is higher than the rewards.

2. Don’t Risk All Your Money

In poker tournaments, it’s crucial to avoid making bets that could potentially make you run out of chips. Once you lose all your chips, you are out of the game. Likewise, when making decisions it is vital that you stay away from those decisions that could cause irreversible damage to your business or company. Even if the call may seem like a good one, avoid putting everything on the line. If the cards don’t fall in your favour then that could prove to be disastrous.

3. Avoid Being Result-Oriented

Realistically, even when making good decisions, it is possible that the outcome is not in your favour. There are times when you make all the right decisions in the game but still don’t win. Similarly, in life, there are situations when you make the best decisions, but the results are not all which you had hoped for.

While poker may be considered only a card game, the lessons that you learn from playing it are both precious and helpful. For more interesting content, keep reading GutshotMagazine.com. Follow us on our social handles FacebookInstagram, and Telegram.
