There are two types of poker games that people can play in—cash games and tournaments. In cash games, a player plays with real money and can exit a table anytime, when he or she feels like. In tournaments however, players pay a buy-in of a certain amount, they are then handed chips. In tournaments, there are only a few places that are paid which means that only a certain number of players make it in the money (ITM).

You have to play these two types of games differently, especially when it comes to managing stack sizes. In cash games, when players are short stacked, they have an option to rebuy. Whereas in tournaments, a short stack could be the difference between making money or becoming a bubble boy or girl. Here’s how you handle or deal with the size of your stack in tournaments.

1. It is very important to keep stack sizes in mind when playing in tournaments. Besides just keeping your stack size in mind, you also  need to focus on the stacks of your opponents. Sometimes you will have passive players at your table, and it will be easy to win a lot more hands. However, tables with aggressive players will try to use their stack size to put pressure on you.

2. Another way to approach stakes sizes is to understand the table dynamics. This helps when you have to gauge the gameplay. You can spend the first half an hour of the game by playing pretty solid to just study the table and how the flow of the game is. This is also a good opportunity to study your opponents.

3. You also need to understand the dynamics of the game at different levels of the tournament. This will help you understand how much value people are putting on their chips. If you know they are putting more value into it, then the best strategy would be to play more aggressively.

4. Your position at the table also matters for your strategies. If there are aggressive players to your left, then it’s best to play selectively and choose only the best hands to play with. On the other hand, if there are passive players to your left then play more aggressively.
