Sam Lam wins APT Taipei 2023 SHR, Jun Obara Is Runner-Up

Level 27, Blinds: 200K/400K, Ante 400K

Sam Lam Wins APT Taipei 2023 Super High Roller

The heads-up clash between underdog Sam Lam and Jun Obara was a short-lived one which lasted for only five hands. All of Obara’s chips went into the pot when he matched Lam’s all-in move preflop. Lam revealed A♦ J♣ against his opponent Obara’s K♠ Q♦ on a board of T♠ 6♥ 4♣ 6♠ 9♦. This gave both players 6-pair but Lam’s Ace kicker helped his sail safely to the top spot. We have a newly crowned APT Taipei 2023 Super High Roller winner in Lam. The title winner takes home TWD 3.99M (~USD $130K) in prize money. The runner-up Obara had a payday of TWD 2,701,100 (~$87,760).

Sam Grabs A Good Chunk Of Chips From Jun

Level 27, Blinds: 200K/400K, Ante 400K

Sam Lam and Jun Obara

Jun Obara limped from the small blind position and his rival Sam Lam checked his option. While we did not get the information on the hole cards, this hand led to Lam grabbing a bunch of chips from his opponent. The flop fell as J♣ A♣ 4♠. Obara bets 400,000 and Lam matches the bet. The turn brings 6♥, Obara again makes a bet and this time for 1,400,000 and Lam calls again. J♠ falls on the river and Lam goes for a bet of 2,500,000. Obara opts for a min-raise of 5,000,000. This action led to an all-in move from Lam. The Japanese player Obara looked a bit stunned on seeing this action by his rival. Finally, he folded and mucked his hand.

Abhinav Iyer Misses The Top Spot, Finishes 3rd For Over ₹46 Lakh (1)

WSOP bracelet winner Abhinav Iyer (K♥ Q♥) open shoves from the button position and finds a caller in Jun Obara (big blind) who played with Dimes. Just one level ago, the above two players had locked horns and that resulted in Iyer getting the heat. The flop of K♠ Q♠ T♠ kept Obara ahead with his set of Tens. The turn and the river of 5♦ and 2♣ respectively did nothing to help the Indian pro improve his hand, and his rail who hoped for a queen to come on either streets were also left disappointed. Iyer took the third spot for TWD 1,755,700 (₹46,63,580).

Yu-Chung Chang (A♠ J♣) kicked off the action with 500,000 from the button position and his rival Sam Lam (K♥ K♣) took the all-in route from the big blind spot. Chang asked the dealer for a chip count of the other players, and only then made the call. 2♦ 6♥ 3♣ came on the flop. J♦ on the turn gave Chang some hope but the 6♣ on the river meant endgame for Chang who got up and left in the 4th position for a payday of  TWD 1,453,800 (~$47,250)

Day 1 Ends With India’s Abhinav Iyer Bagging 4th Highest Stack

The action falls to Yu-Chung Chang who opens with 500,000. From the small blind position Adam Samir Kharman jams and Abhinav Iyer (K♥ K♦) says call. The action went back to Chang who then tanked and later folded quietly. The dealer revealed a flop of A♣ J♥ T♥ which kept Iyer ahead with his King-pair. The turn and river fell as 2♦ and 7♠. This changed nothing and Iyer took a whole bunch of chips from his rival along with the chip lead.

Adam Samir Kharman Exits At 5th Position

Level 25, Blinds: 125K/250K, Ante 250K

Adam Samir Kharman who’s been making some heads turns with his impressive play sadly exited the Super High Roller game in the 5th spot. Unfortunately we couldn’t get the information on his bust out hand, but we do know that he lost a considerable chunk of his stack to Abhinav Iyer and Jun Obara. Iyer crippled Kharman when his Cowboys thrashed Kharman’s pocket nines. In another hand, Kharman lost another chunk of his chips to Obara when his A♠ 7♥ ran into the Japanese player’s 9♠ 9♦. No Ace showed up on the board and Kharman was bleeding dry. Ultimately, the Australian player exited the SHR game in the 5th position with a pay cheque worth TWD 1,172,600 (~$38,100).

Abhinav Iyer Scoops A Pot!

Nathalie Teh Eliminated in 6th position

Adam Samir Kharman kick-started the action from the cutoff position with 400,000. Natalie Teh was the last player to act. She decides to go all-in and gets snap-called from the Australian rival. The dealer fanned out a board of J♠ 3♠ K♠ J♦ T♣ which gave Teh the boot and Kharman the much needed respite with two pairs. The female player’s run in the Super High Roller event ended in 6th place for a prize money worth TWD $924,700 (~$30,050).

The action picked up pace from Sam Lam (middle position) who open-jammed for approx. 30 big blinds. Boonnak Jitrada from the cutoff position quickly made the call for roughly 3,000,000. The remaining players bowed out of the hand leaving Jitrada and Lam to lock horns for the pot. The board ran out 6♠ T♣ 6♥ 8♣ 6♣ and with that it was endgame for Jitrada as his A♣ K♠ had drowned. Rubianes revealed 5♠ 5♦. India’s Abhinav Iyer asked, “Flip?” And Chang who had J♥ J♠ replied saying, “No, No.”

The board read: A♠ 2♦ 9♥ T♠ Q♣. The Taiwanese yelled loudly for a five on the river, but that never happened. Rubianes finished 8th for a payday of TWD $532,300 (~$17,300).

Sai Ho Chiu Falls In The 11th Place

In a previous hand Chiu and Obara had war of words when Chiu with A♦ 2♣ doubled up against Obara’s 9♠ 3♦. The board revealed 5♦ 2♦ Q♠ 3♠ A♥. Chiu knocked on the table after hitting two pairs and said to Obara, “You think I don’t know my 12 big blind ranges!”

And a few minutes later both these players again clashed and Chiu was again at risk. But this time he just couldn’t dominate the hand. Chiu’s A♥ 2♥ could not hold water against Obara’s A♦ K♣ on a board that read: Jd 3♠ T♥ T♠ Xx. These cards meant it was game over for Chiu in the 11th place TWD 325,700 ($10,580).

Jim Sue Pan Finishes 12th!

Level 20, Blinds: 40K/80K, Ante 80K

Jim Sue Pan had his last big blind in hand and had to throw in that remaining bit nevermind what cards he received. Fung Sam Lam and En Ning Chen both were eyeing Pan’s bustout and both the players were involved in this hand.

The flop fells as A♣ 2♥ Q♦ and Lam and Chen put in that extra 130,000 in the side pot. Lam as the aggressor pushed Chen out of the pot when the turn presented 3♠ on the turn.

Lam and Pan both revealed their hole cards. Pan chances were thinning every second with 7♠ 4♦ which were against Lam’s A♥ 3♥. Q♣ on the river concluded Pan dream run in the SHR event and he was out in the 12th spot for TWD 325,700 ($10,580).

APT Taipei 2023 Super High Roller: We Have Our Bubble Boy!

Level 18, Blinds: 25K/50K, Ante 50K

Finally, we have the money bubble at the APT Taipei 2023 Super High Roller. The game saw two players take the exit route in a matter of just five minutes. This Super High Roller game could easily be the fastest money bubble in the history of poker.

It was Vietnamese highroller Ngoc Minh Le who left the game after pushing his last remaining 420,000 chips on the top of the 80,000 open of his rival En-Wing Chen. Le’s A♠ 5♥ were sinking as Chen’s A♦ J♥ kept him ahead.

The flop of  A♥ 2♠ J♣ gave Chen top-two pairs A♥ 2♠ J♣. Le stood up when he saw 8♠ on the turn. Before leaving the table Le had words with Chen that his AJ call should have been a snap call but he slowrolled instead. Chen replied by saying, “I heard you making many remarks of how tight you were so I took my time.”

The Super High Roller was on the bubble and saw a terribly crippled Keng Yong Tan throw his last 2.5 big blinds into the pot holding Q♠ T♥. He got called by Lam’s Q♣ J♠. The board revealed 9♦ 2♥ 6♠ 9♣ J♥. This meant Tan was the APT Taipei 2023 Super High Roller bubble boy. The Malaysian left the game with utter disappointment on his face. But this also means that remaining players were in the money bubble. It was time  when the survivors could say cheers!

Two Quick Eliminations; Bubble Inching Closer

Level 17, Blinds: 20K/40K, Ante 40K

We saw two eliminations and players inching very close to the bubble. And the APT Taipei 2023 Super High Roller Day 2 is getting more fierce by the minute. Take a look at the two eliminations below. This one was a blink and miss elimination at the hands of  Hsien Ren Koh. Short stacked Australian player Tu Thanh Le (J♠ J♥) shoved his remaining tournament life in the middle (with just one 25,000 chip behind left with him). Le’s bet was matched by Koh (Q♥ Q♣). The flop saw 5♥ 6♣ 3♠ and Le threw his last 25,000 chip into the pot and Koh called with lightning speed. The turn and river presented 8♥ and 6♦ which left the Australian feeling helpless. Le left the game just three spots away from the ITM.

In another incident, we have Jason Lau from Malaysia leaving the table, the reporters missed the hand but as seen Lau has been eliminated from the game which means the players are two spots away from the money mark.

Abhinav Iyer Folds AQ Preflop!

Level 15, Blinds: 10K/25K, Ante 25K

Late Registrations Closed. Total Entries Are 117!

While the reporters missed the exact preflop action, we really want to know why Abhinav Iyer folded AQ preflop. Once the WSOP bracelet winner bowed out of the hand, the action unfolded between two players namely, Jim Pan and Wing Po Liu. The pot was worth 500,000 when the action reached the flop stage. With A♣ A♥ 9♦ on the flop, the first thing that comes to mind is—Iyer shouldn’t have folded! Leaving that aside, Pan made a small bet which was matched by his rival. 4♥ and 7♣ graced the turn and river which was checked by both the players. In the end Pan revealed his cards as J♠ J♣ while Liu flaunted his pocket queens.

  • Liu:  Q♥ Q♣
  • Pan: J♠ J♣
  • Board: A♣ A♥ 9♦ 4♥ 7♣
