Poker Dictionary – Jackson-Five

Who are the Jackson Five?

The Jackson 5 is an American pop band formed by five members of the Jackson family, namely Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, Michael, and Randy. Another term for J5 hole cards is Motown music group, which is an American record label founded by Berry Gordy Jr on 12th January 1959. This nickname came into play because Motown was associated with Jackson Five who are also called ‘J5.’

How is J5 associated with poker?

This name originated because of the phonetic similarity between ‘Jacks and Fives’ and the musical group of Jackson Five. When players get a hand of Jacks and Fives in poker, and then as per poker slang, the term is called ‘Motown.’

Most grinders enjoy playing this hand because it is considered to be a secret hand that can be used to the advantage of opponents. It is also believed that Jackson Five helps players to surprise their opponents.
