Poker Dictionary – Ajax

There are many names given to starting hands in poker. These poker terms make talking about the game a little more interesting. In this article, we are going to be talking about the poker term ‘ajax’ which is a name given to a starting hand in poker. A starting hand in poker is the initial set of cards given to a poker player before any voluntary betting takes place. Now, let’s learn what ‘ajax’ means in poker.

What does ‘ajax’ mean in poker?

The term ‘ajax’ is used when referring to the starting hand of Ace-Jack (AJ). Other terms that hole cards AJ are referred to as are ‘Blackjack’ or ‘Jackass.’ It is considered as a fairly strong hand in late position. However, it becomes a problem when it runs into higher hands like AK or AQ.

The hand is a tricky one to navigate on a poker table as it can be beaten easily. So players should not over commit to the pot when they have ajax. Many players tend to play this hand from a late position if there is no significant action that has taken place before.
