Poker Dictionary – Add-on

There are different types of poker tournaments hosted with some having features like re-buys and add-ons. In this article, we’ll be looking at the poker term ‘add-on’ which is used in poker tournaments. It is interesting to learn what these terms mean and how understanding them can affect the way you approach the poker tournaments you play. Let’s begin.

What does ‘add-on’ mean in poker?

An ‘add-on’ is a feature typically included in a re-buy tournament where players can add-on to their stacks after the re-buy period has ended or at the first break. In a re-buy tournament, players can re-buy the starting stack if they have lost all their chips or are low on chips and can continue playing on the same table. A tournament may have a re-buy period that lasts only for the first hour of the game, if a player busts during this period they will be allowed to ‘re-buy’ and continue.

However, an ‘add-on’ is different from a rebuy as it allows players to increase their chip stack regardless of how many chips they still have. For example, a player pays a buy-in of ₹110 to enter a tournament that has a re-buy plus add-on feature. The starting stack of the tournament will be 3,000 chips. Once the re-buy period is over, the player will be given a chance to add-on to their existing stack for an additional ₹110. If the player has 2,000 chips and he chooses to add-on then he will get an additional 3,000 chips.

Add-on Strategy

It is always a good practice to know how much of a boost the add-on will give your stack. If you’ve had a good run and the add-on will only add 10% to your stake for the same amount as the buy-in then it is not advisable to take the add-on. However, it should be noted that this is not a thumb rule and players will have to consider other factors as well. One factor would be if the add-on will get you the chip lead. Even if the percentage may be less but the add-on will help you gain an advantageous chip lead position, then it’s a risk worth taking.

With this, we hope you have gained a little bit more insight into the poker term ‘add-on.’ If you want to know more about other poker terms, then head to our poker glossary page.
