Are Online Games Making Us Less Lonely?

We’ve all collectively been through one hell of a year, no joke. Who would’ve thought that 2020 would turn out the way it would, anyone? Nope. When you’re cooped up in your own house for the most part of the year, its natural to start feeling a little bit lonely. With physical and social interactions already limited into non-existence, everyone does the next best thing they can do, which is dive into the world of the internet and social media.

The internet has truly been a saving grace during this miserable time. Staying away from friends has been hard enough already, but luckily we have our mobile phones and (hopefully) good internet connection to help close that gap in the best way possible. Although isolated from each other, online social interactions have made it easier to keep sane during a time like this. This year alone has seen a boom in the online gaming space with many multiplayer games like Among Us, PUBG, COD, Fall Guys etc. rising into immense popularity.

Are Online Games Making Us Less Lonely?

In a time when people are looking to interact with their friends in the safest way possible, literally and digitally, online games have become the answer. Interactive games or games that require people to share, talk or strategize together were the ones that many preferred to play this year.  From intense, strategy heavy games like PUBG to more simpler but enjoyable games like Among Us, online games have definitely contributed to a more tolerable and relaxed time in quarantine. These games have given users the much needed social interaction in the finest way possible.

Gone are the days when parents would tell us to keep our phones away and play outside. In 2020, inside is the new outside. With the world collectively going through a pandemic, where staying indoors have become the norm, online games have helped fight the loneliness that would normally come with it. Providing many with avenues and online spaces to get together with friends, it has truly helped keep our spirits up while we all wait for this whole *bleep* show to get over.
