Almost Moneymaker Effect 2.0 at WSOP Paradise 2024

Audiences and poker fans were ready for a Moneymaker Effect 2.0 at the WSOP Paradise 2024 Super Main Event. Poker legend Chris Moneymaker has grabbed poker headlines once again. We are about to bid adieu to 2024, but the poker season is still up and about, with WSOP’s grand spectacle, WSOP Paradise, still going on at the Atlantis Paradise Island in The Bahamas. The man who created poker history more than two decades ago returned to the WSOP felts and bid adieu, but not before raising hope of creating another historical moment exactly 21 years later.

Chris Moneymaker, the WSOP 2003 Main Event winner was part of the 2024 WSOP Paradise Super Main Event. The buy-in for this event was $25,000 and the prize pool a whopping $50,000,000, with the total entries standing at 1,978. As the play reached its final day, the number of players left is 9.

Poker fans might have waited for a Moneymaker Effect 2.0 as their favorite poker player reached further and further in the Main Event. However, it was not to be, and he bowed out, still snagging 10th rank for a handsome payday of $500,000. The 2003 ME winner showed potential and had immense support on social media.

However, Moneymaker faced elimination at the hands of Liv Boeree of the UK, who beat Chris’ pocket nines with pocket jacks. Soon later, players bagged and tagged and will return to play the final table tomorrow. See Moneymaker talking to WSOP host Jeff Platt shortly after the elimination:

The Moneymaker Effect

Moneymaker isn’t just any poker player, or just another WSOP ME winner. He won the WSOP 2003 Main Event and created headlines because he was also the first player to become a world champion after qualifying through an online poker site. Legend has it that he qualified through an $86 satellite tournament of the PokerStars online poker card room and won $2.5 Million. Moneymaker’s exploits at the poker table are legendary, with poker industry insiders considering that the game’s popularity soared after Moneymaker, an everyman, won the enormous amount, dubbing the popularity as part of the ‘Moneymaker Effect’.

And it’s not like Moneymaker rested on his laurels. The Nashville-based poker player did what poker players do, he played poker consistently, though his best live cash is still the one he made in WSOP 2003. Before his Paradise cash-out, the last he saw money was in September 2024, at the Event #13 Moneymaker Main Event of the Moneymaker Poker Tour in Cincinnati, taking home $5,199.
