Macau To Impose Stricter Rules For Junkets Under New Casino Bill

The Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) government has announced new updates for the regulation of junkets. On Thursday, Macau’s Executive Council outlined the amendments under the title ‘Legal Framework for Casino Gambling.’ These amendments to the Casino Bill were then submitted to the Legislative Assembly (LA) for further discussion. The amended Casino Bill will work in conjunction with the new gambling law (already with the AL) to establish the conditions for activities of gaming concessionaires, agents, junkets, and management companies.

As per the latest media reports, Macau’s new Casino Bill will have junket promoters work with only one concessionaire each. All the contracts between junket operators and their chosen concessionaire must be approved by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ).

This law will also clarify administrative and criminal offenses and set penalties for inappropriate activities like accepting illegal deposits and breaching rules. Conditions for the closure of gaming areas are expected to be in place soon. At a press conference, while announcing the details of the Casino Bill, DIJC Director Adriano Ho added that the Macau government has received applications from all the six concessionaires to extend the current concessions for another six months. The expiration date has been changed from 26th June to 31st December 2022.

As per news reports, DIJC is currently analyzing the applications and will make necessary announcements about the same at a future date. However, Ho did not reveal any details about the renewal fees despite the subject being widely reported. Talking about junkets, Ho added that 37 junkets are still operational from the list of 46 promoters that were approved by DICJ in January.
