Macau Collects $4.33 Billion In Gaming Tax Up By 13.8%

As per Financial Services Bureau, the Macau government raked in MOP$33.91 billion (US$4.22 billion) in gaming tax in 2021. This is a 13.8% rise as compared to the tax collected in 2020, which stood at MOP$29.81 (US$3.73 billion). While there is a 13.8% the number for 2021 is under the estimated figure of $6.22 billion. The annual budget for 2022 expects the gaming tac to hit the US$61.93 billion mark. The Macau government has collected MOP$3.26 billion (US$405.7 million) n gaming tax in the month of January 2022, which is already up by 1.5% every year. 

The Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau announced the full year gross gaming revenue of MOP$86.86 billion (US$10.82 billion), which is a 43.7% rise in gaming tax when compared to 2020, it was down by 70.3% when compared to 2019. The number of licensed gaming operators as per Macau’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) has now been reduced to 46. In 2013, there were 253 licensed junkets, while 2021 had 85 junkets.

Macau’s GGR was also impacted by the ongoing border restrictions that are impacting the visitor count from China. China’s crackdown on cross-border gambling activities also negatively impacted Macau’s gross gaming revenue (GGR). The Suncity Group had to shut down its junket business as the Group’s CEO Alvin Chau was arrested in November, and Levo Chan, Executive Director was detained in January. 

As per the data sent by China’s Ministry of Public Security, there were more than 17,000 cases of cross-border gambling and more than 80,000 suspects who were arrested last year.
