World Poker Tour (WPT) is one of the world’s top poker series. Incepted in 2002, the WPT has, over the years, expanded across several locations across the globe. Today it is one of the most popular international poker tournaments and televised poker series worldwide.
The WPT title and trophy are considered one of the most prestigious poker titles in the world. The series made its debut in India in 2017, and ever since, there have been three successful editions held at Deltin Royale Casino in Goa. The COVID-19 pandemic brought a standstill to the series. After a hiatus of almost three years, the series is returning to India with WPT Prime India 2023. The series is all set to run between the 12th to 18th April, 2023.
As we gear up for the upcoming edition, let’s look at the past WPT Main Events over the past three editions.
Vikash Mantri
The 2017 edition of WPT India was the first-ever live WPT series hosted in India. It took place from 7th November to 13th November 2017. The schedule of the 2017 WPT India edition had nine events. The coveted Main Event was won by Vikash Mantri, who took home a cash prize of ₹60.03 Lakh for his top finish. The ₹55,000 buy-in Main Event gathered a total of 527 entries battling it out.
Nikunj Jhunjhunwala
The WPT India series returned for a second live season in 2018, between the 13th to 19th of November 2018. The most anticipated Main Event held between 16th to 19th November 2018, broke the previous year’s record by generating a total of 697 entries. The players battled it out across starting flights for four days before reaching the final day, which was then taken down by Nikunj Jhunjhunwala. He beat popular player Sahil Mahboobani in the heads-up to take home a pay cheque of ₹66.35 Lakh. Mahboobani, on the other hand, walked away with the second largest share of ₹46.53 Lakh.
Ashish Munot
The last successful edition of WPT India was held in 2019. The event registered a total of 630 entries to surpass its ₹3.25 Crore guarantee to record a final prize pool of ₹3.28 Crore. Ashish Munot beat Yuvraj Chaudhary in heads-up to clinch his first-ever WPT title for ₹60,99,885. The title also marked his career-best live cash, which remains to be the best of his career to date. The top 79 places were paid at this Main Event.
