Things did not end well in the €1,700 buy-in Main Event for Pierre Kauert in a hand he played on the last day of the World Series Of Poker Circuit (WSOPC) Main Event at King’s Resort at Rozvadov, Czech Republic. Pegged to be the biggest blunder in poker history, Kauert played this hand against Lupo in the 35th hand which should have been a chop pot but instead ended in the former exiting the tournament. He may have taken along a pay cheque of €58,000 and a WSOP Europe Main Event ticket but the situation is FUCKED UP!
The matter, if one were to put it in simple terms is that neither the players nor the dealer or the WSOPC staff realized the rules of poker were not followed in a hand that should have been a chop pot. The realization sunk in much later but the damage was done and Kauert had exited the game thinking he was out.
But what followed was a hullabaloo on social media (read Twitter) on how an established brand like WSOP let this happen. There was an uproar among players and of course King’s Resort too did its fair share of damage control (but nobody on Twitter was buying it!).
Lupo held Ks Jh and his rival Kauert had Js Th. With immense faith in his JTo Kauert went all-in preflop with 10,20,000 and his opponent didn’t waste too much time to call with 900,000. The pot was now 2,220,000 and everyone around had their nerves fried (ours would be the same). The dealer fanned out a flop of 6h Qs Ac which gave both players a straight draw. The heads-up rivals must have surely prayed to the poker gods for their hand to improve on the turn but instead a Jd showed up.
Now both players had a Jack-pair and all eyes were glued to the river card. The dealer revealed 6d. This gave Lupo and Kauert two-pairs but neither of them knew how to read hands correctly (clearly going by the sad outcome of this hand) as there was an Ace on the board (leaving aside the King for a second). Mr. JTo decides to throw bump fists around and leave without understanding that it was a chop pot and he wasn’t actually out of the game. Wonder what happened to Lupo here.

I’d like to see how the guy gets comped for this mistake. Brutal

That look of disappointment when the board pairs – then he just shakes his hand? Bro. He knew. 😂
I'm not gonna have that on my conscience, man. The first thing I do here when he goes to shake my hand if I'm him is let him know we split, but he – nobody speaks up! Crazy! pic.twitter.com/tigV5xoo0E

I saw this also and was wondering how the hell so many people missed it. It was literally the first thing I said (chop), and not a peep from the players or the dealer

OMG IT'S RIGHT ON THE SCREEN – SPLIT POT!

I’m sure at some point in thousands of hands it has, but we’re also a bunch of scrubs in my basement without a professional dealer. Kills me the dude didn’t even realize, got up and left. Before I ever leave when eliminated, I try to make it in my favor in my head any way I can.

In a game like the WSOPC Main Event how much can a player afford to be clueless or lack knowledge of poker rules. Worst thing to happen? The live stream clearly mentioned ‘SPLIT’ for both the players and Kauert was +90K in this hand. Not just the poker Twitter, even the players on that particular table were reportedly confused and left shocked when the dust settled on the matter.
The poker universe is still trying to make it peace with the J4o hand played between Robbi Jade Lew and Garrett Adelstein (Daniel Negreanu had thoughts on this bizarre scandal), and here Lupo is making hay while the sun shines on him. PokerNews made the effort of reaching out to Matt Savage, World Poker Tour (WPT), Executive Tour Director said, “It does fall under player and dealer responsibility and cannot really do anything about it at this point. If it wasn’t live streamed it would never have been realized and so we just move on.”
