Follow Your Heart With Abhishek Reddy

Hola poker players! This is the first article in the ‘Follow Your Heart’ series. What is this series about? We take you through the journeys of poker players who have switched from different professions or have opted to play the game despite tasking day jobs.

The first player we have covered in this series is Abhishek Reddy. He has been playing poker since 2019 and is a pro at the game now. In the ‘Trending Thursday’ tournament that took place on Spartan Poker, Reddy defeated poker pro Ashish Ahuja and emerged victoriously. Reddy hails from Bengaluru and is qualified to be a company secretary. Currently, he is in the field of corporate law, and runs a business in the same field. Gutshot had a chat with Reddy, and here’s what he told us.

When did you kick-start your poker journey?

I started playing poker in 2019. I felt that poker would be an extension of my stock trading skills.

How were you introduced to this game?

I closely followed the happenings in the poker circuit, be it World Series of Poker (WSOP) or India Poker Championship. Due to work constraints, I couldn’t play the game professionally. But once I got into my business, I took some time out for the game.

Which is your biggest win so far?

When I won INR 3.63 Lakh on the ‘Trending Thursday’ tournament it turned out to be my biggest win so far. I have a lot of wins but monetarily this is my biggest.

You are a legal consultant and also run your company, how do you juggle between work and poker?

I mostly play in the evenings and it does take a toll mentally, to focus so much throughout the day. But I love the numbers, be it in stocks or poker.

Has the routine/timings of the game ever affected your day job?

I usually play poker from evenings to early mornings, so it never interferes in my work schedule. But this schedule does affect my social life.

Do you wish to play on a full-time basis any time soon?

In the near future, I do see myself playing poker full-time, but there is no such compulsion.

Any message to fellow poker players who are juggling between a professional job and poker?

I believe physical exercise and time management are enough for any player to juggle between playing the game and managing their day jobs.

Which poker players do you admire?

I look up to both Phil Ivey and Phil Hellmuth.

You defeated poker pro Ashish Ahuja in the ‘Trending Thursday’ tournament. What is the feeling like?

Ashish Ahuja is a very aggressive player. It is a great feeling to match him.

As a poker player, where do you see yourself five years down the line?

Five years down the line, I see myself playing a lot of more live games.

We look forward to seeing Reddy on the live tables. His conviction towards the game is highly commendable. Reddy is one of those players who effortlessly juggle between their day jobs and poker.
