Even after generating buzz post the World Series of Poker (WSOP) 2022 for his Main Event win, Espen Jostad continues to grab headlines. Recently, the Norwegian poker pro and a few other professional poker players participated in the ‘Tortilla Slap Challenge’ that is currently trending. The only difference was that this was done in true high-stakes fashion with the winner getting a $25,000 ticket to the No-Limit Hold’em!
For some more context, the ‘Tortilla Slap Challenge’ is a trending social media phenomenon where participants hold water in their cheeks and then slap one another with tortillas until a person spits out the water. The last person standing to hold water in their mouth will win the challenge. Initially, the challenge was set to take place between high-stakes players like Tony G, Rob Yong, Phil Nagy, and Faraz Jaka on 3rd September at the Luxon Pay Mediterranean Poker Party.
Needless to say, in the end, it was Jorstad who defeated the aptly named Nacho Barbero to win the challenge. Here’s a video of him winning the challenge.
The four original players were going to pay $5,000 each to participate in the challenge to win a seat into the $10,000 6-Max High Roller Turbo. The winner would be the player who could keep the poker face the longest and not spit the water out. However, as poker players love making crazy bets, many others became interested in participating in the challenge. Due to this, the Tortilla Challenge was postponed and restructured so that more players will be able to register into the slap satellite.
The press release on the event stated, “With so many high rollers looking to get in on the action, organisers have decided to increase the stakes and the competition.”
After a restructure, the prize for the challenge was then bumped up to a free ticket to the $25,000 No-Limit Hold’em tournament.
The event started with five players which included Tony G and Jorstad but Jaka backed out immediately as he had other commitments. Tony did not last long as one tortilla slap from Jorstad and a quick slap by Nagy immediately after caused him to spit his water out. Next to go was Nagy who couldn’t hold water in anymore. Yong was eliminated with a good swing from Barbero. The two remaining players continued to exchange slaps and Jorstad landed the winning blow to secure his seat in the $25,000 event!
Currently, Jorstad is making a deep run at the $30,000 6-max event at Triton Poker. He was among the 16 players to survive to Day 2 of the event with 370,000 chips and is now in the money.
