Dhaval Mudgal Is WPT Vietnam Main Event Champion

It was a historic moment for poker in Vietnam as the World Poker Tour (WPT) decided to host its first ever live series at the Pro Poker Club in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. They saved the Main Event for last and this saw a record-breaking Vietnam prize pool of VND 13,172,600 (~$565,000) due to the 679 entries that registered to the tournament.

Plenty of Indians registered to the tournament and many of them progressed to Day 2 as well, but only one Indian went on to make a deep run on the final day. Popular pro Dhaval Mudgal was a dominating force on Day 3 and he was second in the chip lead among the final 15 survivors.

He continued his dominance in Vietnam, eliminating players and entering the Final Table with the chip lead. He kept up this run and slowly but steadily increased his lead, while also getting lucky a few times. Eventually, he took down the title and won the massive first-place prize of VND 2,427,580,000 (~INR 76.63 lakh).

This turned out to be Mudgal’s career best live cash, more than doubling his previous best cash of HKD 335,200 (~INR 31.39 lakh) that he won for finishing 4th in a Macau Poker Cup tournament back in 2015. He had a packed rail supporting him and he didn’t disappoint, shipping the WPT Main Event title – an achievement that he won’t forget anytime soon. He beat Japan’s Takao Shimizu in heads-up, after the two went back and forth for a while.
