Facebook’s AI Bot ReBeL Excels At Playing Poker And Chess

The research team at Facebook introduced a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) robot called ReBeL that can play both chess and poker with ease. The AI uses reinforcement learning to perfect its process of problem solving. According to the company, this progress is a big step towards creating an AI algorithm that could perform well in a range of games.

AI technology has played a crucial role in the gaming community in recent times. With various online formats of games like poker and rummy becoming increasingly popular, it is certainly a must for the corresponding technologies to continuously improve and develop as well.

There have been certain models of AI specifically designed to play games like poker. An example would be the 2019 AI Pluribus, that defeated expert players in a six-person no-limit Hold ‘em (NLHE) round which is one of the most popular form of poker in the world. Tuomas Sandholm, the man behind the design of Pluribus just received an award for his work in AI and further established the significance of his work. But so far there has been no AI algorithm designed that could defeat players in both poker as well as chess, which is exactly what the ReBeL algorithm can do.

The algorithm can play games that have perfect information like chess and as well as imperfect information games like poker. Humans can play these games with ease as we’re capable of broadly considering them different from each other but a machine would only be able to differentiate based on whether it’s a perfect or imperfect information game.

The real-world application of such a technology is boundless, with the researchers believing that it could help deal with functions like fraud detection, negotiations, and cybersecurity. This could be a big thing for the online gaming industry that are looking towards more advance technologies to better the gaming experience for their users. With more innovations on the way, we can be sure that we’re just standing at the edge of a new technological dawn.
