A professor of Computer Science from the Angel Jordan University, Tuomas Sandholm is the latest recipient of the 2021 Robert S. Engelmore Memorial Lecture Award. The professor’s most notable accomplishments was his use of Artificial Intelligence in strategic multi-player games like poker. Tuomas Sandholm was presented with the award by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) for his research and contribution to the AI community. The Engelmore award is held in honour the late Robert Engelmore, a physics alumnus of Carnegie Mellon and an AI research director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.
The most popular form of poker i.e. the No-limit Texas hold’em is the benchmark for testing algorithms that solve imperfect information games. Last year, Sandholm created an AI with his students called Pluribus which became the first AI to beat professional poker players at multi-player no-limit Texas hold’em.
The rise of online poker in the world has established the need for various cutting edge AI technologies to be implemented into online rooms. Reliable AI technologies will further help the gaming industry to give their users the best online experiences. Poker and rummy platforms in India like Spartan Poker, Add52, PokerBaazi, Adda52 Rummy, RummyBaazi etc. rely on smart technologies to ensure optimal fair play in their games.
With the help of new AI technologies, these platforms can enhance their players experience which will further increase the growth of the industry. However, operators and gaming companies are still understanding the extent to which AI can be used. The research of Tuomas Sandholm in this area is therefore valuable as AI could play an even more significant role in the gaming industry.
