17 persons apprehended for gambling in Berhampur, Odisha


Since the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus, the year 2020 has created a new normal for the people in India. Nations have come to a standstill as they have set safety measures and social distancing norms in regards to contain the spread of this infection. On Monday, the local police of Berhampur, Odisha, raided a gambling den and detained 17 persons at the gambling site despite the nationwide lockdown.

According to the report, the police acted on a tip off in regards to a gambling den that is located in Bada Bazar area of Berhampur in Ganjam district. A team of Bada Bazar police strategically conducted a raid in Prashal Nagar area and busted the gambling den. The police also arrested 17 people and were taken into custody. Along with the arrest, twelve mobile phones and INR 26,000 were seized at the site. The accused were led to the courts later in the day and an investigation is underway in regards to the involvement of other suspects in the gambling incident.

In another such incident, a team of the Berhampur Town police conducted a raid in a casino and arrested as many as 15 gamblers and seized a huge sum of money worth INR 7,68,710 from a secluded place in the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) area. They also seized 16 mobile phones and five bikes from the gamblers from the site.

Recently, authorities in India unveiled an illegal gambling racket while they captured the accused using a drone as they were not adhering to the lockdown regulations in relation to the coronavirus outbreak. 13 individuals were apprehended as they defied the lockdown rules and were involved in gambling in the city of Karnal, Haryana. 

People have been involved in illegal gambling activities all over the country. There are people who have been abiding by the health safety regulation set by the health experts of India and some have taken unnecessary risks by taking part in illegal gambling activities.
