WSOP Flashback: Phil Hellmuth extends record; wins 15th bracelet!

Poker world had its eyes focused on one of the biggest days that year – the 2018 World Series of Poker (WSOP). While we take you down the memory lane, you can reminisce some of the outstanding, record-breaking moments in the history of WSOP. Remember the 2018 Main Event titanic heads-up battle that lasted nearly 11 and half hours between John Cynn and Tony Miles? Or Justin Bonomo defeating Fedor Holz heads-up to win 2018 WSOP Big One for One Drop for $10 million enough to overtake Daniel Negreanu! It was a memorable and successful summer for the poker industry but the list doesn’t end right here.

“Honey, am I dreaming?” was the exact question of superhero Phil Hellmuth who asked his wife while holding the supreme bracelet in his hand. Each one present in the room captured the moment witnessing the Poker Brat winning his FIFTEENTH career bracelet in Event #71: $5,000 No-Limit Hold’em that year. At the rate at which Hellmuth is grabbing the coveted bracelet, one can think of him as of one the eight wonders of the world!

Hellmuth entered the WSOP 2018 Main Event dressed as Thor which caused some controversy and was eliminated. But the skilled player is a poker legend no matter what! Hellmuth’s first World Series of Poker bracelet came in the 1989 Main Event, which he ended up taking down for $755,000. The power-packed player won three bracelets in 1993. In 2015, Hellmuth seized the $10K Seven Card Razz Championship title. After 3 year hiatus, the poker pro called an all-in bet from two-time WSOP bracelet winner Steven Wolansky with pocket threes. With the third three on the top Hellmuth sealed his victory clinching to $485,082.

“I’m humbled. It’s humbling. Thirteen in Europe was really humbling for me. And so is fourteen, and so is fifteen.” When asked about extending his bracelet lead, Hellmuth said “It means everything. I want to be remembered in two ways: 1.) For having won 24 bracelets, and 2.) For starting the positivity movement.”

“It’s humbling. I haven’t had a very good summer, but I’ve kept myself positive. Every night I come back to the room, saying, ‘Life is good, relax. Life is good, relax.’ … Before this tournament, I called my wife and said, ‘Honey, I’m not sure I want to play this event. She said, ‘Get in there in play.’”

The 2007 inductee of the WSOP’s Poker Hall of Fame has 57 FT finishes and more than 150 cashes in the prestigious tournament. As of today, his live tournament winnings exceed $23 million and is ranked 22nd on the all-time money list. “The spotlight that I have becomes a responsibility. Once I realized that I could inspire people, I took that seriously,” said Hellmuth.
