If time travel is possible for poker players, one would surely visit the Rio-All Suite in Las Vegas because it is officially the World Series of Poker (WSOP) season! One cannot stop us from reminiscing the old times and several outstanding, super-skilled, unbeatable players. That one pro who has the respect of legends like Daniel Negreanu and Phil Ivey, she has remained quite active and successful throughout the rise and fall of her poker career, Jennifer Harman, the owner of two bracelets.
While a female player has never won the Main Event, several women have claimed WSOP Championship bracelets in open events and Harman occupies a special place in this section. She is one of the only three women to have won two WSOP bracelets in open events. In a typical WSOP Open Event, only 4% of entrants will be female this includes the 2019 WSOP.
Having started her poker career in 1994, Harman stepped in 27th WSOP in the year 1996 where she finished 6th in Hold’em Pot Limit for $15K. Four years later, in 2000, Harman won her first bracelet in the $5,000 No Limit 2-to-7 Draw for $146,250. It was her first time playing that game and she had only received a 5-minute lesson on it from infamous Full Tilt boss Howard Lederer right before the tournament. The champion said, “I won the bracelet when I didn’t know the game [2-7 Triple Draw] beforehand. Howard basically gave me a sheet to study, with what hands to play in what positions. But No Limit Deuce is a draw game, so you don’t see any cards; it’s basically a feel game. You feel your opponent, and when you know how to play—you know the hands and the positions and know a little bit about the game—it becomes a feel game, and I’m good at that. And you need a little luck too! A little luck always helps to win a tournament!”
Her second bracelet came two years later winning $5,000 Limit Hold’em championship and pocketing $212,440. Four years after her kidney transplant, its of no surprise that Harman who cashed 31-times in WSOP, along with friend John Juanda, was inducted to the Poker Hall of Fame in 2015. As of today, Harman’s live earnings exceeds $2 million with her career-best $383K for finishing second in 2005 WSOP Circuit Championship Event – No Limit Hold’em in Las Vegas.
