What Is Double Board Bomb Pot, WSOP 2024’s New Tournament?

Just a few days ago, we reported about World Series of Poker (WSOP) releasing the schedule for their latest edition. Every year, poker players look forward to this announcement and the WSOP 2024 schedule didn’t disappoint either. There were many of the usuals, while some new entries in terms of tournaments, buy-ins, and structures on the schedule as well.

One of the biggest surprises was the introduction of Event #41: $1,500 Mixed NLH / PLO Double Board Bomb Pot. Now everyone’s probably thinking, ‘What the heck is Double Board Bomb Pot Poker?’ But we’re here to solve that for you, delve into the intriguing world of the WSOP 2024, and explore the enigmatic Double Board Bomb Pot tournament. 🃏💥

What Is Double Board Bomb Pot?

  • Format: The Double Board Bomb Pot is a unique variant where players are dealt two separate community boards simultaneously, contributing a predetermined amount of money to the pot in cash games, and predetermined amount of chips in case of tournaments.
  • Community Cards: Instead of the usual single flop, turn, and river, there are two sets of community cards — one for each board. This dual flop structure is unlike any other poker tournament on the WSOP 2024 schedule.
  • Player Actions: As usual, play begins from the left of the dealer button and here, players can use any combination of their hole cards to form the best hand on either or both boards.
  • Showdown: At the end, there are two separate showdowns — one for each board. The pot is split between the best hands on each board. If a player wins both boards or takes down the hand with a bet, they scoop the entire pot. See an example of a double board bomb pot hand below:

Top Board: A♠ T♦ T♣ 8♥ 2

Bottom Board: K♦ 6♦ 3♥ 6♠ Q

Your hole cards: A♣ A♦ 5♦ 4

Opponent’s hole cards: K♠ K♥ 9♥ 2

You win the top board, with Aces full of Tens full house. However, your opponent will win the bottom board in this example, with Kings full of Sixes full house. In such a case, it’s a chopped pot and both players take home split winnings.

Double Board Bomb Pot is usually played in the PLO format but for WSOP 2024, it’s going to be a mixed game of Texas Hold’em and PLO. It’ll begin on 15th June 2024 and a total of 3 days are assigned to this $1,500 buy-in event, with players being allowed two (2) re-entries each. Strategy And Excitement

  • Hand Reading: The Double Board Bomb Pot demands masterful hand reading. Players must assess not only their own holdings but also anticipate opponents’ potential hands; the trickiest part is anticipating hands across both boards.
  • Split Pot Dynamics: The split pot nature adds a layer of complexity. A player might scoop one board and lose the other, leading to strategic decisions. In such cases where you win one board and an opponent wins the other, the pot is shared.
  • Bluffing Opportunities: With two boards, bluffing becomes more intricate. A well-timed bluff on one board might not work on the other.

Key Considerations

  • Board Interaction: How do the two boards interact? Are there potential flushes, straights, or full houses on either board?
  • Equity Balance: Balancing equity between the two boards is crucial. Sometimes, a strong hand on one board might be offset by a weaker hand on the other.
