WSOP 2019: Ashish Ahuja marches on to Day 4 of Event #34

Every year, hundreds of poker players in India grind daily, online as well as live, trying to build a bankroll while also sharpening their skills as they prepare to make the poker pilgrimage to Las Vegas for the annual World Series of Poker (WSOP). Ashish Ahuja is one such player who has bagged multiple big wins in recent months and he’s now doing the same at the biggest stage in Vegas.

One of the most talked about tournaments at the moment is Event #34: $1,000 Double Stack No-Limit Hold’em and we had a handsome Indian participation here too, with several progressing from the two starting flights. However, only four progressed to Day 3 of the tournament, with Yasheel Doddanavar in the lead.

Doddanavar has been making a name for himself with plenty of cashes around Asia this year and now a few at WSOP 2019 as well. However, he was unfortunate not to be able to get a bag to Day 4, busting in 68th place today for $8,685 (~INR 6.06 Lakh). Before him, two more Indian players busted in succession, with Vinod Megalmani exiting in 139th and Aditya Sushant following him in 136th place. The players bagged prizes of $4,501 each.

Day 3 has just come to an end now in this tournament and the only Indian player left in the field is Ashish Ahuja, who progresses with 6,725,000 chips. He had a bigger stack and was among the top 10 stacks for a while before his pocket Sevens lost a major pot to David Guay’s AK a few minutes before the close of day’s play. However, he managed to recover from that as well.

Ahuja progresses among the final 40 players in this tournament and he’ll come back fresh for Day 4 tomorrow, aiming for nothing less than a maiden gold bracelet. The minimum pay that Ahuja is guaranteed from here on is $15,488 (~INR 10.8 Lakh) but we can expect him to do much better than that. Remember, he progressed with only 50k chips from the starting flight and such a deep run seemed very unlikely at that stage.

Denis Timofeev, Timur Margolin, David Baker, Jack Sinclair and others are some of the past bracelet winners in the field with China’s Zinan Xu having taken the chip lead with 16.77 million chips. This player is followed by USA’s Ido Ashkenazi who has 13.7 million chips at the end of Day 3.
