WPT Prime Cambodia 2022: Akshay Kapoor Ships His Maiden WPT Title

The 2022 edition of World Poker Tour (WPT) Prime Cambodia is time and again proving to be a spectacular one for the Indian contingent. While several top pros are clinching titles and making in the money, Akshay Kapoor has claimed his first ever WPT title by shipping the No-Limit Hold’em (NLH) Single Day event at the series.

Kapoor, who is popularly known as ‘AustralianAccountant’ moved to India from Australia during the lockdown, and worked his online poker skills here. This win also marks his first live victory in Asia and the third victory for India at the ongoing series.

While talking to Somuchpoker after his win, he was quoted saying, “It feels great to finally win a live event. I normally grind online now but this is my first ever live series in Asia and I blinked my first trophy in just my fifth event! It feels great. This one goes out to my poker mentor Danish Sheikh who has a big role in shaping how I play today. Hope I can grab a few more trophies before the end of the series.”

The $400 buy-in event recorded 128 entries who generated a prize pool of $44,698. The top 16 of these made it in the money. The final four players settled on an ICM deal and continued to play for the title. Kapoor had a decent chip lead going into the heads-up. In the final hand, Kapoor’s pocket kings overpowered USA’s Scott Christopher Billups’ Kc5s on a rather dry board, as he lifted the title and trophy for $6,496.

Apart from this event the final table of the WPT Event #7 Mystery Bounty event also took place alongside. There were three Indians on the final table of the mystery bounty event which had 250 entries over two days and a prize pool of $ 80,000. On the final table, Deepstack NLH winner Kunal Patni finished fifth for $7,850, Jasven Saigal finished sixth for $3,690, while Gaurav Sood finished eighth for $4,190. Other Indians who made money at this event included Ankit Wadhawan (12th, $1,565), Dhaval Mudgal (18th, $1,130), Laksh Pal Singh (21st, $925), Ashish Munot (29th, $650), and Somashekhar KM (30th, $650).
