WPT Macau 2024 Cancelled

Just three weeks before its scheduled start, World Poker Tour (WPT) Macau has been canceled. In a brief statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the WPT expressed regret for any inconvenience or disappointment caused to players worldwide who were planning to attend the event in Macau. The statement read, “WPT, Wynn Macau, and Allied Gaming and Entertainment (AGAE) regret any inconvenience or disappointment for players from around the world who were planning to travel to Macau and play in the event.”

The WPT further stated, “WPT remains committed to working with Wynn Macau and AGAE in the future to bring world-class poker tournaments back to the region.” No specific reason was given for the last-minute cancellation. The series was the first-ever WPT event in Macau.

Despite Macau’s reputation as a prime destination for high-stakes poker, tournament poker had been absent from the region from 2018 until this past March due to China’s crackdown on online poker. Macau, a special administrative region under Chinese control since 1999, saw this drought end with The Venetian Macau hosting the four-day Macau Masters, which had official approval from the Macau Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau.

The WPT has had two successful stops in Asia this year: WPT Cambodia and WPT Korea. However, WPT Macau is now the second consecutive WPT stop in Asia to be cancelled.

Earlier this month, the “WPT Vietnam 2024 – Passport to the World Championship” event was also cancelled. The cancellation was unexpected; a Hanoi media outlet, Dua Tin, reported that the event had not been authorised by the Department of Culture and Sports. Government officials confirmed that the Crown Poker Club had not obtained the necessary approvals.

The cancellation of WPT Vietnam came just days before it was set to begin. The WPT announced it would refund buy-ins, but many players had already incurred travel expenses that were non-refundable.

The WPT has other events scheduled to directly compete with the 2024 World Series of Poker (WSOP), which began yesterday. The $25,000 WPT Alpha8 Trifecta events will take place at Wynn Las Vegas on 25th June, 3rd July (the day the WSOP Main Event begins), and 10th July. The next WPT Main Tour stop in the United States is the WPT bestbet Scramble in November 2024.
