Will Watkins Ships Record Breaking Grosvenor Poker Goliath

Will Watkins has emerged as the winner of the Grosvenor Poker Goliath, a major event in the UK poker scene. Poker players from all over the world flock to England for this tournament. This year, the tournament saw 11,749 entries, and the prize pool was a staggering £1,879,840, the largest Goliath ever.

Otherwise known as the ‘best pub poker player’, Watkins stepped into the spotlight at Grosvenor Casino, Coventry.  Watkins overcame Gilbert Black’s heads-up comeback to claim the winner’s spoils, while Steven Ricketts finished in third place.

How Will Watkins shipped Goliath

The tournament reached its final table on Day 3, which began with 36 players, and after just over five hours of play. The last elimination occurred on the outer table, with Zhivko Zhikov at risk with Big Slick against Black’s pocket nines, which held up to set up the final table.

At the nine-handed final table, extensive deal negotiations took place. After several minutes, the players agreed on a nine-handed ICM chop and played for the title and trophy. Chip leaders Black, Watkins, and Ricketts each secured six-figure payouts, while the rest of the final tablists earned prizes ranging from £55,580 to £91,655.

Middle stack James Brown was reduced to a short stack after his ace-king missed the board in a three-way all-in, allowing Ben Miller to triple up while Alexandru Abalasei took the side pot. Brown was then eliminated with nine-three against Rickett’s ace-ten.

Ricketts secured another knockout by eliminating Lance Connolly in eighth place. Watkins then got his first final table elimination, dominating Abalasei’s ace-deuce with ace-king, reducing the field to six.

James Hearty, a Grosvenor Poker online qualifier, earned a $91,655 windfall for his 6th place finish after qualifying for just £5. Reece Ling and Ben Miller were eliminated in fifth and fourth places, respectively. Miller’s £55,580 prize was further supplemented by £40,000 from his performance in the Mystery Bounty event.

With three players remaining, Will Watkins was the clear leader and solidified his position by eliminating Ricketts. Ricketts’ ace-queen was no match for Watkins’ ace-king.

Watkins entered heads-up play with a more than 5:1 chip lead, but Black fought back, scoring two double-ups to nearly even the stacks. The final hand saw Watkins holding A♣K♣ against Black’s Q♦9♣. The flop came Q♠J♣9♠, giving Black two pair and Watkins a Broadway draw. Black check-raised and was called, with the turn bringing the A♠. The chips went in, and the J♠ on the river gave Watkins a better two-pair to secure the victory.
