Why Indian schools should have eSports too in their curriculum

Russia, the biggest country in the world just recently acknowledged the benefits of Esports in schools. Taking it forward, Putin has officially taken further steps to inculcate Esports culture along with traditional sports in school curriculum.

Today, we’re going to look at what is Esports all about and why Indian schools should follow the footsteps of Russia.

What is Esports?

Esports also known as electronic sports is a form of sport competition using video games that was first played in 1972 at Stanford University. Esports often takes the form of multiplayer video game competitions, between professional players, individually or as teams. By 2010, Esports was a significant factor in the video game industry and was estimated that the total audience would grow to 454 million viewers, with revenue increasing to over US$1 billion. Currently, India is ranked number 17 in the $1.5 billion eSports industry.

Today Esports is a household term!

Why should schools adopt Esports?

  • Players engaged in Esports learn the value of deep-dive understanding, leadership and excellence under pressure. This would mainly result in a good overall performance in other subjects as well in school. Tejas Sawant, also known as ‘Ace’ is one of the most famous players in India.
  • For many students, Esports is a way to integrate their competitive and leisure life. Developing competitive skills with a group of other players instills a strong instinct for teamwork. Participants gain discipline, a sense of accountability and capacity to take the long view as well as an appreciation for careful attention and strategy in problem-solving.

  • Teens love gaming. By adding Esports as an extracurricular activity, schools will be able to reach out to those students who are often disengaged from school. Esports can help children that are introverts to open up from their solitary world into the common arena of the school. The feeling of acceptance and inclusion gained through activities like Esports will help students’ physical as well as mental health.

  • Esports teams are reliant on constant communication and strategy, which helps players to deal with intense emotions in a competitive environment. Communicating in the right manner even while playing a game will be brought into practise and using cuss words or swearing will reduce considerably.

To conclude, Esports will provide a great level of engagement and a platform for students from all walks of life to get involved. For all the students that have used up their free time in the lockdown by playing Esports, count on your skills. Esports is sure to shine!
