Wednesday Musings: Anecdotes From Poker Players

Whether it’s taking a walk down busy city streets or playing in some of the most lavish casinos, there’s always a story hiding behind every moment. Many of us often take to social media to express ourselves, through pictures, videos, or even long captions. Poker players too are no different. Quite a lot of them use the digital space to tell their stories. Here are a few anecdotes of players that we found hidden within their social media feed.

Radhika Shankar

Making her Instagram debut in August of 2020, poker mom Radhika Shankar decided to start her journey with a small story. Sitting on top of her chip stack is a small plastic figurine of Peppa Pig’s brother George with a slight smile on his face. The picture is accompanied by a caption titled ‘The Story of George,’ in which Shankar tells a short anecdote of her daughter’s enthusiasm. “I’ll open my Instagram account with The Story of George, the baby pig and our journey to my first ever trophy,” she writes with gusto. The sweet tale is certainly bound to pull the heartstrings of all who scroll through her Instagram.

Tanay Hargunaney

For poker player and mentor, Tanay Hargunaney sharing his passion for the game is certainly something that he loves to do. Through his efforts, the Pot Limit Omaha (PLO) expert has helped many aspiring players in their game. Even though being a poker coach is not an easy task, the results are always rewarding. Among the bountiful images of this charming coach, lies one that is covered in blue ink. Written by one of his students, it’s a short two-pager describing the similarities of life and poker. “This is a very good read about aspects of poker and life, how well interconnected and similar both are,” he writes in the caption.

Sriharsha Doddapaneni

This poker pro did nothing but grab eyeballs of the poker community during the 10th edition of India Online Poker Championship (IOPC) January 2012. A visit to his Instagram page shows us that for Sriharsha Doddapaneni, poker is more than a game. In a caption posted alongside a tweet from poker player, Phil Galfond, the mind sport enthusiast expresses his thoughts on poker as a game. One that is similar to other sports but better in so many more ways. With small lessons slipped in between the slightly long caption, Doddapaneni unreservedly declares his devotion to the game. “Proud to be playing a game that has almost no biases, most diverse player pool and gave me opportunity to meet and idolize some amazing people,” he writes.
