Walmart Explored Developing Its Own Cloud-Based Gaming Service

During the Epic-Apple trial, one piece of information that came to light is that Walmart was developing its own cloud-based gaming service. Further, it was revealed that Walmart’s gaming service also had a working prototype application back in 2019.

In the ongoing Epic-Apple trial, a lot of facts and pieces of information were revealed. Recently as a part of the legal process, some of the internal company documents were made public. One such document included emails that revealed that Walmart was exploring the possibilities of offering its own cloud-based gaming service. 

Epic Games’ Mark Rein was seen sharing his excitement for an early version of Walmart’s gaming service with his other Epic staffers in an email thread dated April, 2019. The email read, “I played Walmart’s demo on an Android phone (with an Xbox controller) and the experience felt like playing on PS4 and superior to playing on Android or iOS. They’re going to sell the clip for a crazy low amount, they were saying something like $2.”

The email thread also included some images attached which suggested mock-ups of Walmart’s game interface. At a point during its development, the public beta version was also scheduled to launch in July 2019. However, it did not happen due to some reasons yet to be made public.

There are speculations that the back-end of the gaming service will possibly run on LiquidSky technology. Walmart had acquired LiquidSky technology back in 2018 when the latter had pitched its own cloud gaming service at the CSE 2017 event.

Eventually, Epic Games collaborated with Nvidia for launching Fortnite on Nvidia’s GeoForce Now cloud platform. There were other companies reportedly working with Walmart which then made deals with Google Stadia and other platforms. Currently, for Apple’s iOS users, Fortnite is only accessible through Nvidia’s GeoForce Now cloud service, while the trial between Epic Games and Apple continues in court.
