Vietnam’s Quang Nguyen ships APL Vietnam Main Event

Asia Poker League (APL) Road Series Vol.3, which started on Nov. 15 at the Pro Poker Club in Ho Chi Minh City, just saw its Main Event of VND 8 billion GTD come to an end with the champion being crowned today.

The Main Event of APL Vietnam, which saw final 8 players remaining out of 587 total entries, came to a successful finish after a 6-hour electrifying final table gameplay. Top 74 players were paid out of the prize pool. Vietnam’s very own Quang Nguyen was crowned as the champion of the Main Event after playing some incredible poker.

Nguyen, taking the lead after overcoming a 1:4 chip deficit at heads-up against Korea’s Soo jo Kim, cashed out VND 1,618,750,000 (~INR 49 Lakhs) as first prize money. He had also won the runners-up title last month at the APT Vietnam Main Event, losing only to Tetsuya Tsuchikawa. He bagged upwards of INR 33 Lakhs at this event.

His gameplay at the final table was phenomenal, eliminating three players along the way to face the Korean opponent in heads-up. Nguyen was against a highly prestigious poker player (Kim), adding his chip deficit as insult to injury. Kim doubled up on the first hand of the Final Table itself, and eventually knocked out the day’s entering chip leader, Minh Le, with Quads over Le’s full house.

The heads-up battle went on for about 2 hours, and Nguyen managed to double up twice and take the lead for the first time. He commanded the table since then, and the gap between them widened. Nguyen won the final hand with his pocket Threes surviving till the end. This is Nguyen’s first-ever international Main Event career win and his largest live tournament score as well.

Two Indians played in the Main Event too, but only Abhishek Paul cashed out at 27th place with ~INR 1.61 Lakhs.

Final 8 Payouts –

  1. Quang Nguyen – VND 1,618,750,000
  2. Soo Jo Kim – VND 1,134,820,000
