Vanessa Selbst Announces ‘Retirement’, Quits PokerStars

Most of us try to drop bad habits and make better choices as a new year comes in. However, for 33-year old Vanessa Selbst, it wasn’t about making resolutions but was about choosing a different career path in the New Year 2018. On New Year’s Eve 2017, she announced her retirement from professional poker.

Vanessa Selbst is one of the most successful women poker players in the world, with close to $12 million in live career earnings and a highest live cash of $1,823,430. She is also the only woman ever to have reached the number one ranking on the Global Poker Index and her poker career spanned almost 12 years.

However, Vanessa will no longer be adding to her poker earnings as she announced that she will no longer be playing poker, due to several factors. Moving into her thirties, her priorities have changed towards building a stable home and starting a family – something that is very difficult with all the travels involved in being a poker pro.

She will be leaving behind her poker career to pursue a career in finance as she also holds a degree in law. She took to Facebook to announce her retirement from the game and also mentioned that the next career she will be giving a shot at is a hedge fund. We at Gutshot wish her the best of luck for her latest ambitions.

The American who won three WSOP bracelets, has also announced her decision to end her long-time sponsorship deal with poker giant PokerStars. Whether this was Selbst’s decision or whether PokerStars themselves let the contract lapse, we don’t know. However, the pair have seemed to have separated on amicable terms.
