Tommy Nguyen Wins Monster Stack Event for $1 million

Event #48: $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em MONSTER STACK kicked off at the 2018 World Series of Poker a few days back, with over a million dollars reserved in prize money for the man or woman who emerges victorious. Ultimately, it was Canada’s Tommy Nguyen who walked away as the winner.

Prior to this event, Nguyen had live poker cashes of a little under $200k and had never won a major live poker tournament. Moreover, before the 2018 WSOP began, he had no live poker cashes outside Canada, but he cashed out in a couple of events this series, for combined winnings of $7k.

Then came the Monster Stack Event, which was all set to change his life. He outlasted a staggering field of 6,260 entries to take home a prize of $1,037,451 for first place. This kind of prize money is like a dream come true, especially for a person who had dropped out of school.

“I was actually supposed to graduate this year, but I dropped a course in accounting to take poker more seriously,” Nguyen said after his victory. He beat USA’s James Carroll in heads-up, a player with nearly $3 million in live cashes. A-K was the winning hand, a hand that helped Nguyen many times on the final table.

“I dreamed of this and I always believed I could make it. I never doubted that I was going to win. I was just focusing on winning a bracelet. That was my goal when I came here,” said an emotional Nguyen, who became the 9th person to become a millionaire in WSOP 2018. Yesterday, Indian poker pro Aditya Agarwal cashed out in 27th in the same tournament.

Final table results:

  • Tommy Nguyen – $1,037,451
  • James Carroll – $640,916
  • Francis Rusnak – $475,212
  • Chris Chong – $354,903
  • Daniel Corbett – $266,987
  • Michael Benko – $202,327
  • Shyam Srinivasan – $154,463
  • Harald Sammer – $118,802
  • Rittie Chuaprasert – $92,061
