Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege Has A LOT Going On

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six is a video game franchise first released in 1998 by the game’s initial publishers – Red Storm Entertainment. The success of the first instalment prompted developers to continue churning out five more games, out of which, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege was launched on December 1, 2015 by publishers Ubisoft. With a new reboot of the tactical shooter video game in the market, gamers were scrambling to get their hands on this fresh take on the game. Players on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One were the first to explore the video-game’s newest adaptation of the 1998 book by the American author Tom Clancy.

What is the game about?

The video game is centered around an international anti-terrorist group called ‘Rainbow.’ Recruits for the unit go through training in order to fight a terrorist group called ‘White Masks,’ who are believed be a global threat. Environmental destruction and players co-operation among themselves are the two aspects that the game heavily focuses on. However, for this version, creators consulted real-life counter-terrorist units as they wanted to create authentic situations in their efforts to keep players engaged.

Critical Success

There was an overall positive response from gamers and critics alike and the game even received four nominations at the Game Critics Awards. Elements of the game such as its attention to tactics and multiplayer style were highly praised. However, sales for the game were weak in the start but gradually picked up as Ubisoft adopted the ‘game service’ model. The new improvements and updates that were made post the launch of the game further cemented its status among critics as one of the best multiplayer games in the current gaming market.

Looking Forward To 2021

Even after five years of its initial release, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege has continued to draw in more players. Just this February, it was reported that the game hit 70 million registered players in total, 15 million of which were recorded for the past year. While the video game franchise continues to do well, Ubisoft announced that a new spin-off called Rainbow Six: Quarantine was in development. Looks like fans of this beloved franchise have not seen the end of it just as yet.
