Throwback to Victoria Mitchell winning a few million dollars!

The word ‘Victoria’ reminds a person from Mumbai about the iconic horse carts on the streets of Gateway of India. The Victoria that our Poker industry boasts about is, ‘Victoria Coren Mitchell’.

Poker pro Victoria Mitchell is the first woman player to win two European Poker Tour (EPT) Main Event titles. The first one came in 2006 and the second one was EPT San Remo in 2014. You may not remember the exact moment of her winning the two main events but the record of first-ever female EPT winner has remained and her work towards the industry is still looked upon. Currently, Mitchell sits 44th in England’s all time money list and has won over $2.5 Millions in lifetime earnings.

After tasting victory for the first time at the 2006 EPT London, seven and a half years later she went onto outlast 555 entries at the EPT San Remo 2014 and earned a whopping €476,100 ($658,125). Mitchell’s victory in San Remo was when she started the final table nursing a short-stack and later admitted that she fully expected to be out in ninth. An eventual double-up against Jordan Westmorland, with A K against A Q, and the game was on! Flopping trips against Giamcomo Fundaro who paid her off with his A K. Here’s a snippet from the EPT San Remo 2014:

Coren Mitchell is known for playing poker since she was a teenager and is still highly active at the Victoria casino in London. As a tireless champion, she has remained in the limelight for her contribution to the mainstream media. The PokerStars Pro also conducted a BBC quiz show ‘Only Connect’ and appeared in five episodes of Late Night Poker, a British television series that popularized Poker in 2000.

She documented her career and the times of toil in her recent memoir ‘For Richer, For Poorer: A Love Affair with Poker’. The Poker Pro also regularly contributes to The Guardian and has been inducted into the women in Poker Hall of Fame 2016. You must have read a similar anecdote about poker pro Kevin Roster in one of our Throwback Thursday articles.
