The Legend of Zelda: Here’s Why Nintendo Pulled the Plug on this Live-Action Series

Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda is probably one of its most popular and valuable video game franchises. Japanese game designers Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka were responsible for the creation of this high fantasy action-adventure video game franchise. The first game titled ‘The Legend of Zelda’ was released on February 21, 1986, which then spawned 19 more entries including various spin-offs. The last one, ‘The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’ was released in 2017. It received highly positive reviews from critics with many calling it the highest-rated game of 2017.

According to various news reports, a Netflix live-action series based on The Legend of Zelda was scrapped by Nintendo after news about the existence of the TV series was reportedly leaked by a Netflix employee. The news came as a shock to many fans of the franchise who were eagerly waiting for a live-action adaptation. The sheer amount of material available within the games had the potential to start an extremely successful TV series. Unfortunately, the incident may have just cancelled all the future plans for any kind of on-screen adaptations of the game.

Why such an extreme reaction?

When it comes to new plans in the world of movies and gaming, leaked information is not a new thing. Although unprofessional, it is not an uncommon sight and certainly not a good enough reason to just pull the plug on an entire project. Especially when news around the possibility of series for the franchise was already making the round in 2015. However, the extreme reaction on Nintendo’s part has a clear backdrop. The company is known to be very protective of its assets while also adhering to a strict business model.

With this knowledge in mind, it’s not difficult to see why the leak would have angered the Nintendo executives. It should be noted that there has been no official statement or confirmation by representatives from either Netflix or Nintendo regarding the actual cause behind the termination of their relationship.

The game series has garnered millions of fans around the world and this news has certainly left many of them feeling frustrated. A sequel to the popular ‘The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’ was recently announced to be in development and it is something fans of the franchise can look forward to.
